In doing archival research, I came across this photo of a 1933 Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Rock Creek, California entitled "Wash Room" (courtesy of the FDR Library Archives). It moved me. How happy they all look. They remind me to never take a hard day's work or an honest day's pay for granted. I am humbled by this photo.

I am struck by the power of art to transcend spatial and temporal boundaries. Photos like these remind me of how resilient the human spirit truly is.

I know this may sound strange, but I think wind turbines are beautiful. I'm kind of in awe of them. I get a weird Emersonian feeling when I see them...machines and/in nature. Some things change, but my freakish love of nature-machines runs deep.

Aaron has a favorite chair, and tried to scoot our cat
out of it the other day - only to get this response.
Everything they say about cats is true.

Clint and I are planning on moving out of our tiny apartment in September, when our lease is up.  Since I'll be busy with my internship again in a few weeks and then starting school almost immediately, I've gotten a head start on packing.  My poor fiction bookcase looks so disorganized and empty right now.  I look forward to setting my friends up all nice and tidy in our new place... in a little more than two months.

Portland Spring 2010, here I come! I have just submitted my first ever paper proposal for a conference being held in Portland next spring. Its not just any conference...its THE conference for "my people." For environmental historians, this conference is akin to a candy store for kids! Oh my gosh I'm so nervous I could pee!!

Prior to about 6 months ago, I never took even a multivitamin on a regular basis let alone any kind of regular prescription medications. How times have changed. I'm quickly accruing, much to my utter dismay, quite a pill popping habit.

Meet my new "friends":

  • 125 mg of Levoxyl daily, as a thyroid hormone replacement since the radioactive iodine completely wiped my own thyroid gland out. Thanks Grave's Disease.
  • The bc pill Junel because the radiation would make pregnancy unsafe for at least a year. And because I have PCOS, I need to give my ovaries a break.
  • a wack of Vitamin D and calcium daily for insulin resistance. At least its not metformin. Thanks PCOS. I'm still not exactly sure why or how vitamin D, calcium, and insulin resistance are connected. When I figure that one out, I'll let you know.
  • A daily 81 mg of aspirin because the hyperthyroid caused lots of heart palpitations and freaked me out about heart health.

I think I need an antianxiety medication now from the panic attacks resulting from taking all these meds (KIDDING). I can see how quickly the cycle of pills spirals out of control though.

Because Angel & I live freakishly parallel lives, in every facet imaginable, I will also post a pic of the new cell phone I got. On Saturday, just like her. With a full keyboard, just like her. My first phone that's not outdated, just like her. With unlimited data plan, just liker her. And I'm loving it, just like her. All of this without either of us knowing about the other one. Weird.

The lil bean of a new car!  I shall call him Colin.

We were driving around a few weeks ago and I fell in love with the color of this house. We have to paint our house a) because the existing barn red is ugly, b) my hubbie splashed primer all over the front of the house, thinking he wanted to paint one day then changing his mind after he figured out that painting wasn't fun, and c) all of this combined with peeling paint on old wood is just unappealing.

My house is probably similar in style, period, and size. What do you think of the color? Thumbs up or down?

I usually am not one to get excited about cell phones and I've always had models that are at least 2 or 3 years old, but I bought this bad boy today and it is awesome! I have always hated sending text messages on my old phones because it took forever, but with this full qwerty keyboard it is sooo much easier and faster. I'm still getting used to it but soon I hope to be like those text messaging champions. I even upgraded my plan to unlimited messaging so I may never have to actually talk again!!! Ha. Fat chance of that... Also, it has a touch screen, though I've been having a little bit of trouble calibrating it because I have large fingertips apparently. Too bad they don't attach a stylus to it.

This car is on the way out, after the nth time I couldn't get it to drive when I was ready to go somewhere.  Give me a few days and I'll have a shot of the new one up here!

My poor little skinhead. So about 3 months ago we took Ian to the hair salon and we must have gotten the newest guy on the block. He absolutely butchered his hair but it was good enough to get by until it grew out a bit. Well for the past week I've been noticing that his hair is growing out very unevenly. I tried to figure out a way to fix it while still keeping some hair. Well, what you see is the solution. He's so worried his friends at summer camp are going to make fun of him but I don't think it's that bad. It was hard enought to get him to let me take this photo!

Got my Mom's bday gift WAY early! Her bday is in November! She loves Coach bags and I got this one on SUPER SALE! (Oh the feel of a sale!)  It was normally $428.00 (YIKES) and I got it for about $150.00!! Split that with my other 2 sisters and you have one very nice bag for Mom at a great price! I LOVE giving gifts. This is going to kill me to keep it so long.

Summertime. And she is eating it outside because the slightest hint of watermelon smell near me makes me sick. But, good mom I am, I get it for the kiddos anyway. Don't think I don't remind them with every cut that they better realize how much I love them for doing it!

Luke's chin is getting better day by day. We have to put Maderma on it 3 times per day to break up the scar tissue. I can't believe he was SO good during all this!

I got a new small digital camera for my purse. My friend suggested that I give my old one to Kate. Guess who loves taking photos? She is now actually setting things up to take pictures of them. Its so cute to see how creative she gets! I love this picture of the kids together.
